S-Mode basically locks the user from being able to install anything on their device other than what is in the Win10 and Win11 stores, and they simply use Microsoft as their browser.
Bing can be used as a search engine and search for them This prevents things like Chrome, Classwork Applet, and Zoho Assist from being installed.

Should I turn off S mode in Win 10 and Win 11?

If you want to browse for different programs and you want to download then you need to turn off S mode on the PC.

Why Turn Off S Mode from Windows 10 and Windows 11?

  • You can only use Edge and Bing: When you’re in S Mode, you can only use the Edge browser with Bing as your search engine. That means you won’t be able to use Chrome or Firefox, and you’ll have to go to Google.com when you want to use the search engine.

  • No third-party apps: Windows 10 S only lets you download apps from the Microsoft Store. If you try to install an app that is not on the Microsoft Store, you will see a pop-up window that blocks you from using it.

To see if they have it activated, if they're unsure, walk them through to the About section for their version of Win10.

  1. Open the Start Menu. This is the button in the lower-left corner of your screen shaped like the Windows logo.
  2. Then click Settings. This is the button with the gear icon just above the power options.
  3. In the Settings window, click System.
  4. Then click About in the left sidebar.


  5. You will find what mode of Windows you have under the Windows Specification section.

Disabling is fairly easy to do, and ensures them that nothing will explode on their device if they do.  Windows throws messages at them like 'your computer will run faster,' like they do when you try to install Chrome and they want you to use Edge.  THIS PROCESS IS IRREVERSIBLE.

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Then select Update & Security.
  3. In the left sidebar, click Activation. 
  4. Then click “Go to the Store.” You will see this under the “Switch to Windows 10 Home / Pro” section.


  5. Press the “Get” button under the “Switch out of S Mode” section and wait for the process to complete.
